Another option is to order the material online; there is such a wide selection in colors available, it will blow your mind. It can be ordered by the yard and the price is very reasonable as well; I saw it go for $7.25 per yard, but you may find it even cheaper.

I would suspect you will at least need a sharp pair of scissors or hobby knife and strong thread and sturdy needle. I would recommend using a needle for sewing denim or leather; they would definitely stand up to the job.
This craft is absolutely worth trying and you may regret it if you don't. Let's not take that chance; better safe then sorry! :-)
