Mixing 2 cups of flour, half a cup of salt, three quaters of a cup of water and one table spoon of glycerin/vegetable oil, sounds about right to me and I wouldn't use any less of each.

There are workshops, salt dough clay books, and step by step instructions, which all can be found on the Internet. You can use anything to create your projects with: a garlic press for hair, knives for precision cutting, scissors, etc., etc.

I would recommend varnishing the scupture. My experience has been that if it is not varnished, humidity can eventually cause the sculpture to loose its shape. It is worth keeping this in mind, unless you like salt dough turning in to silly dough! :-)
