When bowling balls were first used in the U.S., they were initially made of a special kind of oak and lignum vitae wood. This changed around 1906, when they were manufactured from hard rubber. The first polyester balls were introduced in the 1960s and 1970s
In the early 1970s, people began experimenting with the hardness of the plastic balls and in 1981 the very first polyurethane cover stock bowling balls were produced and in 1989 they were made with a reactive resin cover.

These displays are very cheap, but sure come in handy to keep the ball from rolling!
