Although nowadays the cupcakes are baked in special metal pans which resemble a muffin pan, there are still bakers who use small coffee, or large tea cups.
In case you would like to try the latter, then keep in mind that it needs to hold around 4 ounces (110 g) which is standard for a common cupcake, unless you like to make either miniature or jumbo size cupcakes.
Cupcakes usually come in a special cupcake liners; those ensure the pastry comes out of the mold easily, is more hygienic, and it ensures the cakes are moist.
The liners are mostly made out of thin paper, but they can also be bought in a very thin aluminum foil and even in a non-disposable silicon rubber version.
