Paper Cutting Art II

Paper cutting finds its origin in China, where it has been practiced as an art for over thousands of years. The oldest paper cut which survived the hand of time and was found in Xinjiang, China, dates back to the 6th century.

An interesting fact is that they were also referred to as Window Flower, because the paper cuts were used a lot for door and window decorations.

Slowly, but surely, this form of art found its way all over the world and became very popular in Europe during the 17th century. The craft of paper cutting is still a traditional activity for women in the rural countryside in mainland China.

Paper cutting was mostly done by European women of the upper-class as well. Even though it required a lot of patience and time, this craft kept them busy during the long, dark evenings of winter.

If you have the patience and the time, I would suggest you try your hand at paper cutting. It is a cheap hobby and can have some amazing results!
