Seat Belt Art II

Seat belts have been around for a while already. In the late 1900s the first seat belt was developed and used in an aircraft to hold the pilot in place while operating the plane.

The first retractable seat belt came in existence in 1955 and was created by a doctor who saw many patients with head injuries due to car accidents. In 1959 legislation was passed by Congress, requiring certain safety standards for cars, including seat belts.

Volvo was the first car manufacturer introducing cars with a three-point belt for front seats in 1959, but lap or sash belts were more commonly found in the backseats of the vehicles until the 1980s.

Since the latter still caused severe injuries during accidents, it became mandatory for all cars to be equipped with three-point belts for both back and front seats in 2007.

The strong webbing of the seat belts lends itself extremely well for all kinds of projects of which upholstery is an important one and shouldn't be overlooked due to its diversity.

That shouldn't come as a surprise, because the name of this safety harness already is a good indicator of that; 'seat' belt! Grin.
