Norman Rockwell's Economical Impact
Norman Rockwell's work took a flight after he painted 'The Four Freedoms' and the paintings were shown all over the nation by the federal government as a promotion to sell war bonds. The demand for prints was so great that many asked the Saturday Evening Post for permission to reprint them.
Norman's illustrations can be found in booklets, catalogs, posters, sheet music, stamps, playing cards, murals and many more products.
He received the Silver Buffalo Award in 1939, which was the highest adult award given by the Boy Scouts of America. He also received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts and got the Interfaith Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1961.
In 1976 the city of Stockbridge, where Norman had taken residence, celebrated a Norman Rockwell Day and in 1977 Norman received the nation’s highest civilian honor; the Presidential Medal of Freedom..
Stockbridge honored Norman by opening a new museum for him in 1993. His work was not only on display at this museum; in November 1999 the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia held an exhibit of Rockwell's work and Rockwell's work was shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2001 as well.
You can probably find prints and products with Norman Rockwell's work all over the world. It seems though that he is more famous and better known in the States. I base that on the fact that I had not heard from, of and about him in The Netherlands, but... that is not a good standard to go by. Grin.
