Georgian Crime Stats

Written by Emilio Transver

If you come down to Dixie and decide to settle down, Georgia might be a pretty good choice of place to grow social roots. If you're somewhat of the urban type, Georgia has various possibilities to offer, in old, large and well developed cities like Atlanta, Augusta, Macon or Savannah. It's true, Atlanta has been on the top ten list of the most dangerous cities in the nation until about 6 years ago, but lots have changed in the mean time, the crime rate has dropped signifficantly and these days all of Georgia's cities provide a fairly safe environment. And if you like to breathe the clean and free country air, there's no better place to enjoy it with your family than in the Peach State.

Deep in the heart of the South, in Georgia's large open green fields and National forests, in cozy little towns where everybody knows all of his neighbours and the Sherriff knows everybody and has more reason to smile than frown, one can find the all so famous southern hospitality and social warmth that makes every little house a home. As a foreigner, I accidentally ended up in Georgia. As an over the road commercial driver, I chose to return to Georgia to settle down. To me, Georgia has been my home for over eight years and I am happy to have made this choice.

I live in a small town here and aside from small economical battles that are being fought all over the country, there's really not much to worry about or to fear. There are certain upper class neighbourhoods around here that have adopted the fancy and fashionable neighbourhood watch system. I'm somehow sure the Captains are bored to death. The only robbery that happened since I've been here ended up pretty funny. The offender "got away" with 27 dollars from the register at the gas station and all he did was cross the street to the police station and turned himself in. He also surrendered his plastic gun.

I, myself, am the proud owner of three guard dogs that are getting fatter and more and more spoiled every day, and the most action they ever took part in is sporting an angry daily bark at the friendly mail lady. I’m looking into the security packages georgia has to offer to see if I might eventually need one. There is a feeling here of comfort and security and a sense of belonging that I haven't found elsewhere. And you don't have to take my word for it. Just come on down on a vacation and say Hello to the first stranger you see. From there on, you're just like family.
