Locker Art

Growing up in the Netherlands is quite different from growing up in the States. Take the school system for instance; Kindergarten and elementary are the same, but after that it is hard finding similarities when comparing the levels of education.

Even in appearances there are some significant differences. Where the halls of schools in the U.S. are defined by rows of Lockers, there are none in the Netherlands. At least there were none while I was in college, but that may have changed over the past several decades.

It was common to drag your bag with books, gym clothes and lunch, from class to class. The book bags were dumped next to the seats and it often occurred that the teachers had to step over them when handing out papers. Since no one had a School Locker, there was no way to avoid that.

Depending on how many classes I had that day, my book bag could get rather heavy and going from the school building to the gym for physical exercises could literally end up being a pain in the back. Guess what; no Gym Lockers there either. We just set them on the floor or the benches.

I like the idea of each student having a locker, but I don't like the way those boring, grey rows look. Maybe the art teacher could make a project out of sprucing them up. That might backfire though because no one would mind anymore being sent to the locker room!
